Marzocchi's TST Damping System PDF Print E-mail

TST (Terrain Selection Technology)

This is a 5-position click system that effects the compression in ways that air pressure alone cannot. There are essentially 4 compression settings and the fifth is a complete lockout. With each increase in TST position, the compression gets both stiffer and slower. Think of the TST as a damping system that effects the compression in a similar way that rebound effects the decompression. Here’s a setting by setting view of each TST position:

TST Pos
Effect
Good For
1

Very soft, very light linear spring rate

Light riders, getting every single millimeter of travel

2*

Some initial resistance, still apparently linear

Small bump sensitivity, light use, plush

3*

More initial resistance, slower compression makes it seem stiffer throughout

Balance between small/slow bump sensitivity and pedal efficiency

4*

Stiff and slow feel but still smooth, very pedal efficient,

Pedal efficiency, bottoming resistant, decreases brake dive

5

Complete lockout

Out of saddle climbs, fire access roads

*Most riders tend to ride in one of these three settings.

Keep in mind that with the TST system, or other as well, as you increase pedal efficiency there is a degree to which you sacrifice the small bump/slow speed sensitivity, but with a Marzocchi it’s really not that much. The fork somehow still stays plush and reactive, but for super plushness you may want to choose one setting below your optimal climbing setting.

As a personal recommendation, I prefer setting 4 the most, and sometimes revert down to setting 3 for less challenging rides. I love the benefits of less fork dive when braking, the pedal efficiency and bottoming resistance. The difficult thing is to explain how the fork is not quite as plush yet somehow remains very smooth. Yes, smoothness and plushness really are two different things and if you don’t understand what I mean than you need to get on a Marzocchi “hybrid fork.”
